Maratha Emperor “Chatrpati Shahu”

Chatrapati Shahu was the fourth Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire created by his grandfather, Chhatrapati Shivaji. His real name was Shivaji but more popularly known as Chatrapati Shahu, he was taken prisoner with his mother in 1689. He came out of captivity by the Mughals and defeated his aunt Tarabai in an internecine conflict to gain the throne in 1708. After the death of Aurangzeb, leading Mughal courtiers released Shahu with a force of fifty men, thinking that a friendly Maratha leader would be a useful ally.

Shahu was the shadow of his grandfather, Chatrapati Shivaji and his great father, Chatrapati Sambhaji. And one lady who created this fourth Chatrpati of Maratha Kingdom was his great Mother “Maharani Yesu bai”. Chatrpati Shahu was very silent in nature but his patience and passion was magnificent. He was full of great skills which he derived from his grandfather and father and ofcours he was ethical who’s credit goes to his mother.

Chatrapati Shahu’s Darbar was famous for free discussion of political matters. Grant Duff himself mentioned one occasion on which a heated debate took place between Peshwa Bajirav and PantPratinidhi Shirpatrao on the question whether extension of Maratha power should be made first in the north or in the south. So to discuss any political matter Darbar was held any time from early morning to late night. Also time taken up in a single meeting was not fixed. Time of meeting was determined by nature of business done. On Sept. 1735 Chatrapati Shahu, on his return from hunting, held a Darbar in the evening which lasted right until midnight. Chatrapati Shahu was used to give a most of patient hearing to talk of others, but he was generally firm in his opinions. Chatrapati Shahu was very strict in maintaining the moral purity of his court.
